WWN Reflection by @JulietKego: Question – WHAT exactly are you selling and WHO are you selling it to? One of the most important lessons I was taught a few years ago in my MBA class is the ‘Reason behind the reason.’
That is why are people/companies REALLY in business? If you understand your big WHY, it drives your priorities, strategies, plans and success.
For instance, I learned that Starbucks is NOT a coffee business. Starbucks is really in the PEOPLE business, they just happen to sell coffee. And they have CLARITY on exactly the type of demographics they’re targeting. Who is your T-pop (Target Population)? What’s the reason behind the reason your company, services, product etc exist? What’s the reason behind the reason why people buy what you’re offering?
Apple is NOT a phone/tablet/computer/music company! Coca Cola is not a pop/soda company. Nike doesn’t just sell shoes. All around us companies have succeeded in building beyond brand loyalists to actual tribes and communities. And by the way, Taylor Swift is not just selling music…..
(We studied the Taylor Swift phenomenon at a Women in Business Initiative a while back and all I can say is, give it up for Ms Swift! We were unanimous in concluding that this dynamic young lady has enough smarts and proven ability to run world-class branding and marketing courses in institutions! From age 11, she had a pretty clear idea of the type of community she wanted to build. Those that are caught in the price-wars/under-cutting competitors in commoditized markets will find it hard to thrive without a fundamental understanding of WHAT it is they’re selling and/or who they’re actually competing with. You gotta know your big WHY! This drives EVERY.SINGLE.THING…
I’d like to thank business coach extraordinaire Lisa Renzelman Blalock for 10 coaching and mentoring sessions which resulted in CLARITY and ALIGNED action steps. I met Lisa in Toronto at a extra-ordinary leadership training weekend and in a few minutes, she’d asked the questions that put my brain in focused creativity. Even though she lives in California, I asked (no shamelessly begged to be her client) 🙂 Thanks to Casey James Combdenfor making the connection! I see, feel, hear, taste…the difference!
Once, you’re super clear about your goals, and bridge the integrity gap of what action steps you need to reverse-engineer, your RAS kicks in (Reticular Activation System), and the universe conspires to provide the resources and connect/attract you to the people who you need to serve and collaborate with ( Paulo Coelho was right after all). And that wise, old saying is really correct; whatever you focus on really does EXPAND!
So watch you patterns of thoughts, words, actions and inactions…..Be courageous to pattern-interrupt what doesn’t serve your vision/goals AND move away from environments/people who stifle your dreams. Always BE growing. Always BE learning. Always BE evolving. Take some time to self-reflect daily. Channel your creativity with purpose. Dream wonderful dreams and co-create your destiny with God!
Love, Light & Truth!
