This introductory information session is designed for anyone curious about worker co-operatives! You’ll learn about the basics of worker co-operatives, exploring their unique co-op structure and their positive impact on members, businesses, and communities.

You’ll also discover how this type of co-op contributes to the development of more equitable and sustainable economies.

This information session is hosted in collaboration with the Canadian Worker Co-op Federation (@canadianworkercoop), Whole Women Network Worker Co-op (WWN Co-op), Glitter Bean Café Co-op (@glitterbeancafe), and the Workers’ Action Network of NL.

Meet the Presenters:

Rosa (she/her) is a settler person of Acadian and Scottish descent living in Kjipuktuk on unceded Mi’kmaq territory. She believes deeply in work that restores collectivity, commons, and care in our relations. She is a worker-owner of @glitterbeancafe Co-operative (https://www.glitterbeancafe.com/) and Program Assistant for the International Centre for Co-operative Management.Her educational background is grounded in post-capitalism, solidarity economics and co-operative management. When she grows up, she hopes to be a co-op developer. When not absorbed in a computer screen, she is enjoying the unfolding of the seasons, seaside walks with loved ones and the delightful pairing of coffee and pastries.

Hazel Corcoran is the Executive Director of the Canadian Worker Co-op Federation (CWCF) @canadianworkercoop since 1995, and also (from 2009 through 2017) of the CoopZone Co-op Developers’ Network, Hazel has been involved in all aspects of worker co-op development and support including capitalization, advisory services, research and writing. She has also been involved as a manager or director with other types of co-operatives and non-profit organizations.

Trained as a lawyer and fluently bilingual, Hazel has served the co-operative movement in a variety of other capacities, including as Director of Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada, (June 2013-June 2016). She was elected to the Board of Co-operators representing the Alberta region in April of 2016, where she is now in her third term.

In her spare time, Hazel enjoys spending time with her family, walking in nature, and cooking Cajun food, a legacy of her origins in New Orleans. She’s also an active member of Prairie Sky Cohousing in Calgary.

Juliet ‘Kego Ume-Onyido is a Financial Advisor with one of the leading Financial Institutions in Canada. She is also a Social Justice Advocate, an International Speaker-Poet, and Master-Certified Leadership Coach-Trainer.

A passionate advocate of financial resilience and socio-economic opportunities for women and girls, she is an active proponent of the cooperative movement and the solidarity economy using an ecosystem approach. She is a co-founder of  Co-operative (WWN Co-op) – culturally informed financial literacy and cooperative education for underserved women and youth, using an iterated digital model of ROSCA – Rotating Savings & Credit Association (“SUSUs”), anchored on indigenous African lens/values/frameworks. She is also one of the ten co-founding members of Black Women Professional Co-op (BWP Co-op); a Black women-led multi-stakeholder consulting co-operative, supporting black women professionals and entrepreneurs.

As a feminist and poet, her works of poetry amplify the lived experiences of women and girls, and proceeds from her global poetry recitals and speaking engagements support the education and empowerment of vulnerable girls and women in under-served communities across Africa. Juliet loves writing, reading, traveling, exploring world cinema, belly-dancing and dreaming.
